Slippery Elm & Marshmallow Root

Why do I have to take GI Protect two hours away from my pills?

Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root: Timing Around Your Medications

Ulmus rubra · Althaea officinalis

These two gentle herbs are among the safest in the whole library, and they come with one instruction that customers sometimes miss: take them apart from medications. Here is why, and what the research says about how they work.

What it is

Slippery elm inner bark and marshmallow root are both demulcents — plants rich in mucilage, a soluble fiber that swells into a soothing gel when it meets water. That gel coats the lining of the throat, stomach, and intestine. Both have been used for centuries for sore throats, occasional heartburn, and digestive irritation, and both are considered safe enough that the FDA recognizes slippery elm as a throat-soothing ingredient in lozenges.

What the research has looked at

Doses used in research

Traditional use is 1–2 teaspoons of powdered bark or root stirred into warm water, once or twice a day. GI Protect delivers 2,000 mg of each in one bedtime scoop.

Interactions and cautions

The mucilage that makes these herbs work can also coat other things — including medications taken at the same time — and reduce how much of them is absorbed. That is why we ask customers to take GI Protect at least two hours apart from any oral medication. Marshmallow root may have a mild effect on blood sugar and on lithium levels, so people on diabetes medication or lithium should mention it to their provider. Neither herb is habit-forming.

A note on the evidence: for these two mucilage herbs, most published research is preclinical or small-scale; large randomized human trials are limited. The references below are provided in that spirit — mechanistic and review literature rather than definitive clinical trials.
